How do I stop system message pop ups?
ANSWER
You should probably turn the Windows Messenger service off. The Messenger service is not MSN but a tool for administrators to communicate with other computers under Windows 2000 and Windows XP. It has been exploited as a new form of spam that is a lot more intrusive than emails because they pop up right in the middle of your screen while doing other tasks.
To disable the service, hit START and click on RUN (German: Ausfuhren). Type in services.msc and hit enter. This will bring up a dialog box. Scroll down and find Messenger (Nachrichtendienst) and double click on it. Change start up type to disabled (deaktiviert) and hit stop (beenden). Voila. No more Messenger windows should appear |

Net users must take a greater role in combating unlawful and illegal online content by reporting dodgy material to watchdogs |
27th April 2004 - Innocent E-Mails followed by Telephone & E-Mail Terror - The latest problem to hit E-Mail users in Hamburg. Every day many companies and individuals are sent no end of Spams and viruses by E-Mail - most of these E-Mails cannot be traced back to the senders - we also receive many illegal mails and have been forced to filter most of them out, with the risk of losing other E-Mails. As a result, new dimensions have been reached and a new breed of anti-spammer crusader has emerged. As they are unable to find out who these criminals are, they are attacking other senders and taking out their frustration on the few people who send E-Mails that can be identified, most of whom send E-Mails for totally innocent reasons, but may have some form of commercial connection. Recently an E-Mail concerning Amnesty International, and an appeal to stop the stoning of an African woman was doing the rounds, and those that answered it using the E-Mail addresses in the list are now being threatened by phone and sent E-Mails. These E-Mails were mostly answered by reply, without looking to see whose E-Mail addresses were in the list - most assumed they belonged to people they knew and it was OK to answer. Our reports have revealed that one person, who tried to sound like an arrogant young lawyer, is one person behind the calls and E-Mails. The German speaking male caller, whose name is now known, is just one spanner in the works and part of the latest wave of E-Mail related problems. If you have been called or contacted, please let us know.
If replying to E-Mails, always check to see that you know all the people in the list and never send E-Mails with more than one recipient by open mail (the golden rule), with the result that all recipients can see all E-Mail addresses. Always send a list by Bcc - Blind Carbon Copy (many people are not aware of this function. If you receive an E-Mail that has been sent like this, you cannot see the people on the list, so do not reply to all, only to the sender and only if you know them well. This new breed of anti-spammer has spent time reading legal reports on the Internet and has nothing against starting legal action or has nothing else better to do, which could result in very high costs for those trying to scrape an existance or even for charitable institutions - another blow for the small business operator who relies on E-Mails to cut costs! |

Serious Virus Alert - SoBig.F described as fastest spreading email virus yet |
Sept 2003 - Hamburg English Pages has received over 40 E-mails so far with this virus/worm - MS Outlook 2002 blocked the attachments and the Virus checker helped. It got through the firewall, but did not cause any damage. Delete any E-mails with this in the subject line, even those sent using names of people you know: Re: Thank you!, Re: Your Application, Re: Approved, Your details, Re: Your application, Re: Wicked screensaver, Re: That movie - delete it from your Papierkorb / Deleted items folder afterwards - DO NOT open the attachment and switch off the preview facility in Outlook and Outlook Express, as a cautionary measure. We sent a warning out to our contacts and this caused a flood of virus infected E-mails in return. We believe this is an action against Spammers, as mass E-mail senders would suffer from this too - take care if you send newsletters. Don't let inexperienced people open your E-mails! Don't let people connect laptops to your network, until they have been cleared. Update your firewall and virus checker daily - www.free-av.com |

- When visiting online Email facilities and you send Emails from the website itself, try not to click on the small cross in the top right of your window when you leave. Logout using the button provided. Your Email account could remain open to hackers if you don't log out properly. This could also apply to online banking and any website facilities calling for passwords and user names, but this has yet to be confirmed. Occasionally online Banking programmes save information onto the magnetic strip on the card used, after the logout button is selected
- If you hate pop-ups, select ALT then F4 on Windows computers. Do not select the cross on the top right of the pop-up, as they are occasionally dummy window closers which allow further pop-ups to appear or even give permission to install spy-ware on your hard drive. If for some reason the pop-ups start increasing at a very fast rate, hold ALT and F4 down until they are gone and then delete the contents of your "Temporary Internet Files" and "Cookies." I quite often get asked where these files are. The simple way to find them is to select "Start" and then "Search" and then enter the file name. "Search = Suchen" on German operating systems. The folders are still called "Temporary Internet Files" and "Cookies" on German Windows computers. These folders are in the Windows folder on Win 98 systems and on Win 2000 systems under "Documents and Settings" in your personal folder under "Local Settings." If you are in a network, there could be many personal folders

Ad-Aware Link |
AdAware is a free multi-spyware removal utility that scans your memory, registry and hard drives for known spyware and scumware components and lets you remove them safely. If you frequently try out various freeware and deinstall them if you don't like them, then Ad-Aware is good. You'll be surprised at what's going behind your back when you log on to the Internet! You can set it to start up when Windows starts and delete all applications that connect to the Internet and send information from your PC |
Anti-Virus Personal Edition Link |
Offers protection against computer viruses, and is free for individual and private use on a single PC-workstation. F-Prot can also be used. The choice of which anti-virus software is good is debatable. If you don't open attached files without confirming what's in them from the sender, you could use any of the free AV software available as additional protection |
