Loads of chocolate bunnies need to be found and noshed, as in previous years on board the museum ship, Rickmer Rickmers. Sweet toothed visitors from 8 to 12 years old will be let on board the RICKMER RICKMERS free of charge on Easter Monday, the 5th April 2010, between 10:00 to 14:00 hrs. On board they will have to learn some things about Hamburg's floating landmark, in order to solve three small tasks. Then, they will be given their sweet reward in the captain's cabin
While the children are busy taking part in the Easter Bunny rally, parents have the opportunity to find out more about the historic cargo sailing ship RICKMER RICKMERS in peace, but help for the zealous "rabbit seekers" is of course allowed!
Afterwards, families have the opportunity to visit the on-board restaurant and take part in the Easter Brunch. Children under 12 accompanied by their parents, don't pay a cent!
Hamburg English Pages EXTRA: see last year's text for location link > here. The ship has it's own post office and stamps. Take photos and add them to our Facebook group: http://facebook.englishpages.de. The best photos can be included on the Easter page, which is online all year - please state that you would like that to happen, in the comments box below the photo. Permission of parents is required for photos of children

|
Ingredients
25g/1oz fresh yeast
150ml/5fl oz warm milk
1 ascorbic acid tablet*
2 eggs
450g/1lb strong flour, sieved
1 tsp salt
7.5ml/1½ tsp mixed spice
2.5ml/½ tsp cinnamon
2.5ml/½ tsp nutmeg
50g/2oz caster sugar
50g/2oz butter, melted and cooled
125g/4oz currants
55g/2oz mixed peel
Method
1. Blend the fresh yeast into the milk.
2. Crush in the ascorbic acid tablet.
3. Beat in the eggs.
4. Add the flour, salt, mixed spice, cinnamon and nutmeg to a bowl and add the sugar, butter, currants and peel.
5. Stir in the liquid to form a soft dough.
6. Turn on to a well floured surface and knead for 6-8 minutes until smooth and no longer sticky. Divide the dough into twelve and shape into buns.
7. Place on a floured baking sheet. Using a sharp knife slash a cross on each bun. Cover and rise in a warm place until double in size, about 45 minutes.
8. Bake in a hot oven, 200C/400F/Gas 6, for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Brush hot buns with golden syrup or honey.
* The addition of a small amount of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) eliminates the need for the first rising of the dough. Ascorbic acid / vitamin c (make sure they are not flavoured) tablets are obtainable from the chemist in 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg sizes.

| 2. Simnel Cake - BBC |
|
|
Easter wouldnt be Easter without a good old fashioned simnel cake. Bake yours in advance and itll be perfect by the Easter weekend
Ingredients
110g/4oz butter or margarine
110g/4oz soft brown sugar
3 eggs, beaten
150g/5oz plain flour
pinch of salt
½ tsp ground mixed spice (optional)
350g/12oz mixed raisins, currants and sultanas
55g/2oz chopped mixed peel
½ lemon, grated rind only
1-2 tbsp apricot jam
1 egg, beaten for glazing
For the almond paste: (Marzipan)
125g/4oz caster sugar
125g/4oz ground almonds
1 egg, beaten
½ tsp almond essence
Method
1. To make the almond paste: place the sugar and ground almonds in a bowl. Add enough beaten egg to give a fairly soft consistency. Add the almond essence and knead for a minute until the paste is smooth and pliable. Roll out a third of the almond paste to make a circle 18cm/7in in diameter and reserve the remainder for topping of the cake. 2. Preheat oven to 140C/275F/Gas 1. To make the cake: cream the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs until well incorporated and then sift in the flour, salt and spice (if using) a little at a time. Finally, add the dried fruit, peel and grated lemon rind and mix into the mixture well. 3. Put half the mixture in a greased and lined 18cm/7in cake tin. Smooth the top and cover with the circle of almond paste. Add the rest of the cake mixture and smooth the top leaving a slight dip in the centre to allow for the cake to rise. Bake in the preheated oven for 1½ hours. Once baked, remove from the oven and leave to cool. 4. When you are ready to decorate the cake, preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 3. Brush the top of the cooled cake with the apricot jam. Divide the remainder of the almond paste into two; roll out a circle to cover the top of the cake with one half and form 11 small balls with the other half. 5. Place the circle of paste on the jam and set the balls round the edge. Brush all the top with a little beaten egg.
6. Return the cake to the preheated oven for about 10 minutes or long enough for the almond paste to brown.
Or if you want something a bit different why not try our chocolate simnel cake:

| Every year, traditional Easter fires are lit along the Elbe. The best way to see the fires is by visiting the area between Nienstedten and Blankenese (new link 2011: click to see both exact points to go). Many watch from the river itself or from the many boats available in the harbour area. Parking is almost impossible, so most walk down from the S-Bahn train stations, Blankenese and Klein Flottbek - check the time of the last train, in case you stay longer than planned. Trains/Buses, HVV boats and map. One of the local websites: www.nienstedten.de has an English section translated by Hamburg English Pages |
| |
| The volunteer fire service have listed some more locations in German - see the website and the rough translation. Open both, for reference, in case road names or locations have been translated. Train stations needed to reach the areas: S1 green line, to Klein Flottbek (12 mins walk to Elbe) or Blankenese (16 mins to the Elbüfer). We suggest you get out at either station and walk along the Elbe and back up to the other station - we managed it in circa 1 hour (slowly). There is no parking anywhere nearby. The nearest parking is usually the same distance as the train station - so not much point really |
|
| If you don't like large crowds, stay in the Nienstedten area (train station: Klein Flottbek). From Klein Flottbek train station, come out on the opposite side from the buses (down the steps, turn left and right up the ramp) and walk down Kanzleistrasse to the bottom (over the cobbled road - two parallel streets), go left and first right past the International Maritime Courts - the rest is easy to see. As with all large events leave no valuables in the car, keep an eye on your bags and don't wear mobile phones on belts. Have a nice time and remember it is usually much colder next to the Elbe than anywhere else - so wrap up warm! Photos below |
| |
Google Maps: NIENSTEDTEN (2nd route through the park - follow the dotted lines - zoom in and out a few times, if you can't see the lines). There is a tunnel under the main road here: click here (point B).. BLANKENESE. Reminder: Blankenese will be full, with a number of people who cannot behave. The buses from the station will be full, as they are much smaller. Walk down the main shopping street, opposite the train station, slightly to the right at the crossroads, past the ice cream cafe, the church and the market place, slightly right again and down the steps to the river beach - almost a straight line.

| Translation of official notice from Hamburg's government (adapted). Received 2008.
During Easter in Germany, bonfires are lit to drive away the Winter, especially along the river Elbe. So that nothing goes wrong and you are able to enjoy the evening, here are a few tips:
We would like to recommend the larger of the Easter bonfires. This is an ancient tradition and as such has a very special charm. Thanks to preliminary checks by the voluntary fire brigade, also one of the safest bonfire events. In many parts of the city, many of the larger Easter bonfires are organised in advance by the volunteer fire brigade. Guests only need to take care of sausages and drinks, everything else has been organised, including official registration, building of the fire in a safe manner, correct height of the bonfire, the correct distance to buildings and roads and the use of safe fuel.
For immediate help call 112.
If you intend to have a bonfire locally on a small scale, remember that you can only burn untreated orgnanic waste. Everything else is garbage/rubbish incineration and is subject to strict statutory regulations and can lead to fines and fire brigade costs. Bonfires are not allowed at other times of the year. Please think of your neighbours, keep a safe distance, about 100 m from buildings, 200m from roads and railway lines and do not stack the wood too high up - 5 metres high and 8 metres in diameter. In all cases have enough water to put out the fire in case of accidents. In addition, a fire blanket and an extinguisher would be sensible. A garden hose is often not enough.
The golden rules for large and small bonfires are: build on sandy or sealed soil. Ground vegetation on meadows, slopes or embankments should not be burned. Just before setting light to the bonfires, they should be checked again, especially bonfires which have been there for a while. Many animals and birds live in these bonfires. With many people surrounding the bonfire, birds and animals are unable to escape and would experience an agonizing death. Those who do not succeed to do this, should vigorously shake and hit the bonfire to frighten the inhabitants away.
For more safety details in English, use www.google.co.uk and search for '' bonfire+rules+bonfire-night+firework-code+guy-fawkes+safety '' - search UK only.
